Serendipity.

Carol dashed in this morning as I was frying a crab cake and toasting the accompanying
English muffin. "Let's go over and talk to the science teacher Mark Fontenot right now. It's his planning period.". The Haines high school is a 3 minute walk. I walked into the new facility and was pleased to see a school built with the aesthetic sensibility that says "all students deserve to learn in beautiful artfilled surrounding". The fine works of Tlingits, Alaskan artists and student artists were carefully integrated into the design of the schools beautiful nature center architecture. Lettuce was growing in the windows. It is a school of 300 K-12. We met with Mark, the marine biology teacher. He had just completed a day on the Loggerhead Turtle and jumped at the idea of presenting my Turtleworks. Can you come back in an hour? Yes, indeed.
We had a beautiful time together. The students asked perceptive questions. At the end of class
a young man who had been very attentive shared with me that he was an exchange student from Malaysia. He is sponsored by an exchange program called YES. It is a program that brings Islamic students to the states to promote peace and understanding....that not all Muslims are dangerous....nor do all Americans think they are.

He showed me pictures on his cell phone of his own involvement with the Leatherback turtles in Malaysia! He had stunning photos of a mother turtle laying her eggs...lit from under the turtle. We could see the point of her tail in the hole. I hope he will email them to me to share.
Later today I visited the library to make some plans with Jolanta for a children's class. I am including a photo Mom and Babe at work.

  1. Hey - couldn't wait to read your blog this evening. The school and library sound wonderful, but the crabs...oh my what a treat. Take Care.
